Music is a natural and necessary product of daily life. It is the distillation of the many facets of human experience, and for that reason alone it is important. But for the music student, the educational and developmental benefits of learning to play an instrument are far reaching and long lasting.
To teach violin (for instance), is to teach critical thinking skills: analysis, interpretation, inference, explanation, self-regulation, open-mindedness, and problem-solving.
What is that weird sound I hear, what’s causing it, and how can I eliminate it? How can I maintain my focus on the notation while also being aware of where my fingers are playing and if my bow is tracking properly? Now that I know this piece well, what can I do to make it faster? These multifaceted questions can be answered by using the “process” of critical thinking.
Over time, the focus, patience, and self-discipline gained by students of music become part of their way of being in the world. They become more observant, more self-aware, more confident, organized, and self-reliant, and they begin to use this same “process" to address other issues in their lives such as social awareness and homework habits, etc. Life is full of challenges and learning to play a musical instrument helps teach students of all ages to be good problem solvers.
